Coonamble is an ideal base to explore the NSW country region. Take a day trip to Dubbo to see popular attractions such as the Western Plains Zoo, Old Dubbo Goal, Pilliga Forest with its salt caves, sandstone caves, bore baths, and sculptures in the scrub. Visit the Warrumbungle National Park with bush walks, lookouts and the sliding springs observatory.
Coonamble was built on the Castlereagh River after the first land lease, Coonamble Run was established in 1840. The river is known as the upside down river because most of the time the river runs under the sand, but when it rains it becomes the fastest flowing inland river in the state. The Coonamble Museum, historic graveyard, Coonamble Heritage Walk and the Nickname Hall of Fame, showcase more history of the area.
Across the road is the Coonamble Bowling club, a popular day and night spot for locals, with TAB, pokies, bar and bistro facilities as well as bowling greens. There are several country pubs, an RSL club, and local shops and cafes all within walking distance. There is also gun, golf, greyhound, and horse racing clubs offered in the area.
