Tour The Vinyards on a Bike
Cycling has been described as the best way to explore the Marlborough wine region. Blenheim TOP 10 Holiday Park have a large fleet of quality bicycles for hire from reception, meaning you can leave straight from your accommodation, without any unnecessary travelling by car. Bikes are fully equipped with pannier bags, helmets and locks. Alternatively, there are a number of great tours available which include a coach tour of the local wineries. Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre was established to provide a world-class destination for the appreciation of historic aircraft. The centre is located in Blenheim, near the Omaka Air Park. If you?ve always dreamed of flying, or have an interest in New Zealand heritage, Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is for you. Shopping - Marlborough Farmers Market
While staying at Blenheim TOP 10 Holiday Park, check out the Marlborough Farmers Market, which is held every Sunday (November- May), rain or shine. The aim of the market is for customers to be able to purchase all of their edible shopping needs in one place. From fresh berries, to stone fruits, vegetables, wild meats, olive oils, sheep?s milk, cheese, herbs, breads and preserves, the selection is vast!
Sea Kayaking
The Marlborough Sounds are most peaceful explored by kayak, without the noise of fellow passengers or loud motors. Enjoy the freedom of being able to slip into nooks and crannies inaccessible by boat. Take a picnic and relax on one of the golden sandy beaches. Kayaks are available to hire in all the main centres. If you?re after a day fishing, Marlborough has a range of options to satisfy your needs. Fishing is plentiful in the Marlborough Sounds, charter services and scheduled fishing excursions available. Take a weekend away with the boys or take the whole family along for a cruise. Educational Eco-tours are available that offer mammal watching, water skiing and a live-fish tank. It?s fun for the whole family! Marlborough also offers guided heli-fishing for the more adventurous fisherman! Brightstone Blues, Brews & BBQs
The Brightstone Blues, Brews & BBQs is a celebration of good brews, great food and amazing Blues and Rhythm and Blues music. The full-day event will next be held on 5 February 2011. Make your way around the 40 sites, trying a selection of over 70 beers and BBQ treats such as wild pork, local seafood and ostrich. Tickets go on sale mid December and tickets can be purchased from BNZ Blenheim and Picton, the Marlborough Centre and the i-SITE Visitor Centres at Blenheim and Picton. There are no gate sales.
Marlborough Wine Festival
Held in February each year, the Marlborough Wine Festival showcases Marlborough as New Zealand?s largest winegrowing region and the international home of Sauvignon Blanc. Take your pick from around 200 wines from over 40 local wineries. Accompany your wine with a selection of delicious local gourmet food; this is a day not to be missed!!
Havelock Mussel Festival
The next Havelock Mussel Festival will be held on March 2011. The festival celebrates the NZ mussel industry and Havelock?s increasingly significant part in it. Bring the whole family to the mussel festival for a day of fine food, entertainment and education. Enter one of the fun competitions, explore the art and craft stalls or sit back and enjoy the popular local and national bands on offer.
Beavertown Rally
Ulysses Club Beavertown Rally is held each year in October. Many motorcycle enthusiasts, all over 40, come to enjoy a weekend of events organised by the Ulysses Club Marlborough branch.
Walk and hike
For those who enjoy walking and hiking, Marlborough is paradise. From well-established tracks to unexplored nature trails, there?s something for everyone.
If you like to take your time, enjoy a private walk, where you can experience true relaxation and escape. The Queen Charlotte Track is well known for its breathtaking beauty, winding 71km through native New Zealand forest. Take at least a full day to explore this amazing area.
There is also a range of short tracks around the area, from coastal treks to secluded beaches, or the picturesque Essons Valley Dam track through native forest, along a freshwater stream. Motuara Island also offers great tracks, which lead through a bird sanctuary, with amazing views to Ship Cove, known for being the bay that Captain James Cook held anchorage while charting New Zealand.
If you?re after a more organised walk or hike, try one of Marlborough?s many guided tours. Learn about the local Maori legends and the meaning of the area to local Maori.
From wilderness tours along the Queen Charlotte Track, to tours of the Marlborough wine region, you?ll spend the day smiling, whatever you choose to do.
