Stay in our Avoca accommodation and discover this historic goldmining town. Avoca is located approximately two hours' drive from Melbourne, at the eastern base of the Pyrenees Ranges. After gold was discovered near Avoca in 1852 the town flourished in the mid to late 19th century. As the gold rush drew to a close, the grape growers took over and today the area is home to 16 vineyards. Avoca is known for its unusually wide main street, which contains a parkland and war memorial in the centre.

While staying in our Avoca accommodation, find out about the town's past by following the Avoca Historic Walk and discovering historic buildings, including: what is said to be the oldest operating Chemist shop in Victoria, Labors Chemist, which was established in 1854; the courthouse which was built in 1857; the Avoca Primary School, built in the 1870s; and the Police Camp which was established in 1853 for the 50 troopers assigned to maintain order during the gold rush. Take a break from local history and browse in some of the local boutique galleries, stop for a meal at one of the cafes, or purchase some fresh produce, including great berries.

Treat your taste buds, while staying in our Avoca accommodation, by visiting some of the local wineries, the two closest to town are Blue Pyrenees Estate and Mount Avoca Vineyard. The Moonambel area, 20km North West of Avoca, is worth visiting as there are five wineries in the area and the historic Commercial Hotel, built in 1866 still stands. Another nearby historic settlement is Percydale, which flourished during the 1870s' gold rush. Today one of the only remaining buildings is Daly's Cottage, built in 1865.
