This includes Deer, Thar (goats), Wallabies, Kunekune pigs, Giant Eels, Native birds, and lots more. It also boasts its own natural freshwater spring "Te Waireka" (meaning Sweet water). NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute:
Being in Rotorua you can not miss visiting Te Puia located near Quest Rotorua. Also known as NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute it offers the comprehensive introduction to many aspects of Maori culture. Visit a Kiwi House to catch a glimpse of this icon NZ bird. Come out at midday concerts at Te Puia which provide an easy and exciting introduction to Maori culture. It is accompanied by a traditional ceremony which starts from visitors gathering outside the main entrance to the Marae. A traditional welcome marks the start of 45 minutes of song and dance inside the sacred meeting house. Here, surrounded by the carvings of ancestors, visitors are treated to perfect harmonies, the seductiveness of the Poi dance, the ferocity of the haka (war dance) and the complexity of Tititorea, the stick games. At times, eight batons fly from four different directions. The receiver must catch and flick the batons on and do so in timing with the song. It is a dance within itself.
Hell's Gate:
The unique geothermal muds and waters of Rotorua are renown for their curative and invigorating properties—and this is particularly so at “Hells Gate” - Rotorua’s most active geothermal park. For more than 700 years Hell's Gate or Tikitere as it is known to the Maori (New Zealand's indigenous people) has been a special place of wellness from the medicinal sulphur lake to the curative waters and muds of 'Hurutini' (name of a geothermal pool). Hell's Gate and Wai Ora Spa both have a free pick up service to take guests there.
