| Getting There |
Fraser Island is located three to four hours north of Brisbane, Queensland. There are basically two main access points to Fraser Island - from the south via Rainbow Beach (Inskip Point) and from the west via Hervey Bay. You must have a 4WD to visit Fraser Island. All visitors will require a permit to travel on the island. These can be purchased in person at Rainbow Beach or from the barge at Hervey Bay or at Visitors Permits online. Eliza Palms is located at Orchid Beach, at the North Eastern end of Fraser Island. There are barge services daily via Rainbow Beach from Inskip Point, from River Heads, south of Hervey Bay, and from Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay. From Rainbow Beach barges run on demand between Inskip Point and Hook Point between 0600 and 1730. From River Heads there are three services daily to Wanggoolba Creek and three services daily to Kingfisher Bay Resort. The service from Urangan is not a scheduled service, so please check with the ferry companies for sailing times. For further details on ferry and barge services, timings and costings, please check directly with the ferry companies. Getting to Eliza Palms Arriving Via Inskip Point - once arriving on Fraser Island at Inskip Point, it is a two hour drive to Eliza Palms at Orchid Beach via Seventy Five Mile Beach. Basically head north and follow the signs to Orchid Beach Arrival Via Harvey Bay. Once arriving on Fraser drive to Eurong, turn left at the beach and head north, and follow the signs to Orchid Beach. Drivers should be aware of tide times and keep off the beach for two hours either side of high tide. Driving conditions vary with weather and tides. Speed limits are 35km per hour on inland roads and 80km per hour on the Seventy-Five Mile Beach. Normal road rules apply. Carry essential spares as well as a towrope, spade, water and first aid kit. On the beach, drive around the low-tide times. Indicate when overtaking, turning or passing and pass on the left. Slow down for pedestrians, wildlife, vehicles and aircraft and beware of humps and creek washouts on the beach. When inland stay on formed tracks. Most tracks are narrow and two-way so keep a look out for passing bays. Give way to buses and downhill traffic. Fraser Island Roads and 4wd Tracks - The main routes and circuits are clearly marked on the various Fraser Island Maps available, some maps also outline access to the majority of the island's attractions. All roads are sand and signposting is usually displayed on the designated tourist drives, but is recommended that visitors carry maps. |

| Things To Do |
Around Orchid Beach: Orchid Beach is located in beautiful sheltered Marloo Bay, north Fraser Island. Due to its remote location, and there being no resort hotel in the area, it is out of range of heavy beach traffic, tour buses and day-trippers. There is a vehicle free beach between Waddy Point and Champagne Pools which is very popular for families. Eliza Palms is a five minute walk to beautiful beaches and is in the vicinity of Indian Head, Champagne Pools, Waddy Point, Ngkala Rocks and Ocean Lake. Fishing: Fish for bream, whiting and flathead all year round, and tailor when in season. Swimming: Waddy Point has many shallow lagoons that are ideal for swimming Whale Watching: Orchid Beach is a great place to whale watch in the winter months. Whales can often be seen breaching close to Waddy Point. A little farther afield: Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Visitor Guide Fraser Island Ocean Lake Ocean Lake is home to a variety of water birds taking advantage of the reeds and undisturbed sections of the lake. Nearby, an easy walk through cypress, banksia and lelaleuca woodland offers a good lookout with panoramic views. Lake Allom Tucked into a rainforest hollow, this lake offers a cool respite from the beach environment. A circult track around the lake meanders through a variety of plat communities. Wait on the viewing platform and watch for freshwater turtles. Eli Creek Cool off next to this crystal clear freshwater creek that flows through vegetated banks and out to the beach. Watch for eels and frogs from the boardwalk, and see small fish swimming against the current. Kingfisher Bay Sheltered coastline, impressive views across the Great Sandy Strait and historical sites are all within easy walking distance of Kingfisher Bay. Lake Wabby The deepest lake on Fraser Island, its shore lies at the advancing edge of the Hammerstone Sandblow. Drive around and up to the ridge above the lake, where a short walk takes you to a splendid lookout offering a view of this barrage lake and the sandblow that is slowly engulfing it. Lake McKenzie This inland, perched lake is a popular site. White sand and sparking blue waters attract many visitors. Parking is limited. It is best to visit before 10.30am or after 2.30pm. Central Station Many walks leave from Central Station. Stroll through the rainforest along Wanggollba Creek boardwalks, and stand among some impressive satiny trees in Pile Valley. Lake Boomanjin Ths is the largest perched lake in the world covering almost 200ha. Its waters are stained brown by tannins leached from the vegetation. There are many more sites to discover on Fraser Island. Make Eliza Palms your accommodation base and discover them for yourself. |
