The Welcome Swallow is a hostel lodge and campground set in 27 acres of native bush. A hidden valley paradise with tree ferns and birds in abundance. The hostel provides a large comfortable living area and accommodation in beautiful cabins overlooking the valley. Set in wild subtropical forest yet only 10 minutes from amazing sandy beaches. Local activities include diving the Rainbow Warrior wreck, fishing, surfing, snorkelling and of course bush walks. In the evening soak under the stars in the hot tub and enjoy a cold beer round the camp fire. Welcome Swallow Activities: * Follow the various bush tracks. * Explore the native forest here and in the neighbouring scenic reserve. Watch the abundant bird life – Swallows, Rosella parrots, Tuis, Kingfishers Fantails and maybe a Kiwi. * Relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. * Jump in the swim hole and cool off. * Soak in the fire heated hot tub under the stars. Talk, sing and play music around a real camp fire. Take a short drive and enjoy some of the many activities available in the area. The hostel has five rooms: 1 double, 2 x double with single bunk above and 2 x shared bunk rooms with 7 beds in total (3 & 4) Near the rooms there is a bathroom & a shower room. Both have a sink & a toilet. The lodge has a large living area. The kitchen adjoins to the living area & has great views over the valley. Rooms come with bedding - sheets pillows & duvet. Extra blankets can be found on the shelves in each room. There is WiFi reception in all the rooms & lodge. The bathroom, shower room, living area & kitchen are all shared with the other guests. The kitchen has kettle, toaster, oven, hobs, pots & pans, cutlery & crockery. The living area has two tables which are often put together to make one large long or square table & benches to sit on. There is also an internet kiosk. In a cosy alcove there are comfy chairs, an amplifier & speakers to plug your ipod or MP3 player into and a log fire for you to enjoy. |

Reception times are 9am - 11am & 5pm - 8pm. Check in and check out should be within these times. Late check ins can be arranged by phone or email. If you arrive early just relax and enjoy the lodge. At reception press the bell to get our attention. |

| Getting There |
From south of Kerikeri: Heading north on state highway 10 go past Kerikeri and through Waipapa and Kapiro then take a right turn towards Matauri Bay. You are now 8.7km from the The Welcome Swallow. Follow the road towards Matauri Bay for about 6km then take a right turn onto Hikurua Rd. Hikurua Rd is a gravel or metal road and is about 2.7km long. The Welcome Swallow is at the end of the road, please come down the track and find reception. From north of Kaeo: Heading south on state highway 10 go through Kaeo then take a left turn towards Matauri Bay. You are now 8.7km from The Welcome Swallow. Follow the road towards Matauri Bay for about 6km then take a right turn onto Hikurua Rd. Hikurua Rd is a gravel or metal road and is about 2.7km long. The Welcome Swallow is at the end of the road, please come down the track and find reception. * If you turned left onto a gravel or metal road after Kaeo you are on the Matauri Bay cut through road. Just turn left when you meet up with the main Matauri Bay road and follow the road on until you see Hikurua Rd on the right. By Bus: Take Intercity bus to Kerikeri or Kaeo. | Things To Do |
Diving: The Cavalli Islands just off shore are excellent for diving. Beaches: The area has many outstanding beaches. Matauri Bay is the most famous and has 2 beaches. Harbour Cruise: Whangaroa is steeped in history. A harbour cruise will give you the chance to hear the fascinating stories while enjoying the wonderful sights. Kayaking: Beautiful coastline with safe sheltered beaches, Whangaroa harbour or out around the Cavalli Islands for the more adventurous. Surfing; Fishing; Art Galleries; Wineries |
