| Things To Do |
Newcastle has long had the reputation of being a good time town. However, along with Gateshead, it's hoping to become European capital of Culture in 2008. One of the main cultural focus points is the new Gateshead Millennium Bridge, built to carry pedestrians and cyclists across the river Tyne and colloquially known as 'the blinking eye'. It's the world's first tilting bridge, which makes it a huge working piece of art. The bridge connects the city of Newcastle to the town of Gateshead. One of the most recent cultural developments is Baltic, The Centre for Contemporary Art on the Gateshead Quays. On five floors with over 3,000 square metres of art space, onstantly changing exhibitions, artists, studios, a library and a cinema space, there should be something for everyone and it's all free. When you want to reflect on art over a cup of coffee, like most galleries, there are several places to refuel. Newcastle is packed with bars and restaurants that have got fantastic interiors but Ginny reckoned that you can't beat the Ladies loos in the restaurant at the top of the Baltic. It's got a pretty good view for a loo! For a more traditional arts space head to the Laing Art Gallery on New Bridge Street. The permanent collection there includes some famous pre-raphaelite works and has a good range of touring exhibitions. You don't have to go to a gallery to find art - it's all over the city. |
