Things To Do St. Mark's Square: St.Mark's Square is the very heart of Venice and the square itself is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

St. Mark's Basilica: Mysteriously eastern, gloriously western, and one of the world's most incredible buildings. The original church, a large wooden edifice, was first built in 805 to house the body of St. Mark.

Biennale of Venice: Occuring every 2 years, this international contemporary art exhibition draws artists form all over the world. The 53rd edition, held at the Giaridini della Biennale and at the Arsenale, will runs from mid June to early November 2009.

Doge's Palace: Former seat of the Government and law courts, and Doge's residence fromthe 9th century to the fall of the Serenissima Republic.

Santa Maria della Salute Church: Magnificent Venetian Baroque Church by Architect Baldassarre Longhena, built on more than one million oak piles.

La Fenice Opera House: Inaugurated in 1792, the theatre La Fenice was the most important in Venice and one of the most elegant of Itlian theatres. Destroyed by fire in 1997, the theatre has now been completely restored to its original glamour.

Rialto Bridge: Built between 1588 and 1591, the Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal in the heart of Venice's shopping area and is without doubt the city's most famous bridge.

The Ghetto: The first Ghetto of Europe instituted in 1516 by the Venetian Republic as a compulsory place of residence for Jews.

Bridge of Sighs: 17th century stone bridge with two internal passageways which connect the Doge's Palace with the city dungeions.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection: Italy's most important museum for European and American art of the first half of the 20th century.

Museum of Naval History: Housed in a 16th century barn and divided into 30 sections, shows the history of the Venetian Arsenal and displays a rich collection of relics of the Venetian Serenissima Republic era and of the Italian Navy. Ground floor accessible to disabled.

Accademia of Fine Arts: among the most important in Italy, this gallery features an extraordinary collection of works by the greatest exponents of 14th to 18th century Venetian painting.

Island of Burano: Home to fishermen and with 5000 inhabitants, one of the most important centres of the Northern Lagoon. The attractive bright coulours of its houses have made it popular with artists. The principal economical activities are fishing and the production of lace.

Island of Torcello: This island lies in the Northern Lagoon and was founded in the 7th century. It was a flourishing trading city from the 9th to the 12th century until its population was decimated by the plague and malaria and the island lost its place to the rising city of Venice. Today two interesting churches may be visited.

Island of Murano: Venice boasts a rich history as a glassmaking centre and from the 15th century, world over, the island has been almost synonymous with the creation of the finest and most elegant glass. The Museo Vetrario is located in the Palazzo Giustinian in Murano.
