You will find the hotel in the Lesser Town below Prague Castle, near the tram stop Malostranské námestí (Lesser Town Square). If you come by the underground, leave the train at Malostranská Station on Line A, from where it is only one tram stop to Malostranské námestí (Lesser Town Square). The Lesser Town, where the Hotel Sax is located, is one of the most beautiful parts of Old Prague. Nearby, you can find the most famous Prague sights, such as Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Saint Nicholas Church, or the Church of Our Lady of Victory. You can also admire the Lesser Town palaces and Saint Nicholas Church from the windows of the hotel rooms. LOCATION Take a walk around the surroundings of the hotel! You can visit some of these important places: CHARLES BRIDGE Is the oldest surviving bridge in Prague. It was built in the mid 14th century by King Charles IV and has a total of thirty baroque statues dating back to the beginning of the 18th century. NERUDOVA STREET Walk up to the castle along a street full of houses with baroque façades and historic architectural details. The street is named after the Czech writer, Jan Neruda who was born here, and whose works masterfully described life in Prague in the second half of the 19th century. PRAGUE CASTLE A few minutes will not be enough to see the vast residence of Czech kings and presidents. Admire the grandeur of St Vitus Cathedral, the exquisite collections of European art or the enchanting miniature houses in Golden Lane. STRAHOV MONASTERY The Church of the Ascension of Our Lady is situated in the centre of the monastery grounds. It is referred to as the Basilica Minor, a name given to the most important catholic churches and cathedrals. Inside the monastery, which is mostly baroque in style, you can visit the Museum of National Literature - a historical library with ancient manuscripts and prints in magnificent halls, as well as a handsome collection of ancient art. PETRÍN A landmark lookout tower - resembling the Eiffel Tower of the late 19th century - dominates the top of Petrin hill and its stunning parks. There is also a mirror labyrinth with distortion mirrors inside and a giant 80 m2 diorama by the Lieberscher brothers depicting the battle between the Czechs and Swedes in 1648. If the thought of climbing to the top of Petrin hill by foot is not to your taste, take a ride in the cable car. THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY VICTORIOUS AND THE INFANT JESUS Inside the baroque church, you will find the famous statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague - Bambino di Praga. The statue was originally from Spain and dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. It was brought to the Czech lands by local noblewoman Maria Maxmiliána Manriquez de Lara who married Czech nobleman Vratislav from Pernštejn. The Infant Jesus protects the monastery from all forms of catastrophe, and people from all over the world come to ask for its help and guidance. ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH St. Nicholas Church adjoins the official Jesuit house of professors dating from the late 17th century. The church is the work of master baroque architects Kryštof and Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer. Both the exterior and interior are noteworthy, and the interior offers a spectacular collection of paintings by renowned baroque artist Karel Škréta. This is one of the true treasures of the Czech baroque period. KAMPA Even Prague has its "Venice" - Kampa, which you can visit on your way to Charles Bridge. The park will take you all the way to Certovka (The devil's stream) - a man-made branch of the Vltava River (The Moldau), which runs the original wooden wheel of former Velkoprerovský Mill. LENNON'S WALL A wall dedicated to the memory of music icon John Lennon can be found on the outskirts of Kampa on Velkoprevorské námestí (Priory Square). The wall was decorated by many high-profile and less well known artists. Every year on 8th December, people gather at this wall to honour the memory of this legendary musician. |
