| Things To Do |
-Fourvière's Basilica: Built between 1872 and 1896 the basilica has an eclectic style (austere on the outside and very richly decorated inside). There are many mosaics, stained glass windows and marbles. You can admire the panoramic view from the esplanade. -Place Bellecour: Formerly known as the Royal Square, la Place Bellecour is located between the Rhone and the Saone rivers in the Presqu'ile district. In the centre of this square (one of the largest in all of Europe) there is the famous statue of Louis XIV on horseback, masterpiece of Francois Lemot. -The Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre: The area surrounding Lyon was once part of the Roman Empire. The majestic of the architecture survives. The Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre is an example, built in 19 A.D under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Today, remains of the Roman and Gallic civilizations are displayed in a museum here. -Parc de la Tete d’Or: This huge park, over 262 acres, has a lake, a zoo, and a botanical garden. Famous for its rose garden the park has no admission fee. |
