Sanctuary Retreat is an affordable accredited eco-tourism rainforest sanctuary at Mission Beach, North Queensland, half way between Townsville and Cairns. Set on over 50 acres of lush tropical rainforest overlooking the Coral Sea, Sanctuary is as much a refuge for travellers as it is for wildlife. Designed to minimally impact on the outstanding natural values of the environment, Sanctuary offers guests an intimate, yet comfortable rainforest experience in a unique and beautiful setting. Sitting high on a hill to catch the cooling breezes and views across the forest to the Coral Sea beyond, the Sanctuary long house captures the essence of the tropics. Polished hardwood floors, high ceilings with fans lazily shifting the balmy air and a balcony situated perfectly to watch the sunrise heralded by a dawn chorus or a full moon appear out of the sea at sunset. Accommodation is in secluded forest cabins nestled under the rainforest canopy. | Getting There |
The Sanctuary 4WD vehicle transports guests and their luggage to the main building from the carpark. Sanctuary is about 15km’s north of the coach terminal, so you will need to catch the local Mission Beach Beach Bus from the terminal to the end of the line which is a shop called Connor’s Corner. There is a payphone there, so let us know you are there and we will collect you and transfer you to Sanctuary. The Beach Bus generally leaves the coach terminal at ¼ past the hour every hour from 9.15am to 5.15pm though there are some exceptions and we will advise you of these when you let us know your arrival time. Alternatively or outside of these hours the Mission Beach taxi (tel:0429 689366) can transfer you to Sanctuary at a cost of approx $40.00. It is generally advisable to call them beforehand so they can meet you when the bus arrives. |

To help ensure the serenity of Sanctuary is preserved, no private vehicles are allowed beyond the carpark. The Sanctuary 4WD vehicle transports guests and their luggage to the main building from the carpark. |
| Things To Do |
At Sanctuary you may wish to indulge in one of our relaxing massage therapies, join in a yoga class or simply choose to relax on one of the many beautiful spots on the property from the pool, the hammock or just sit on the deck and watch the ocean. In the local area you can enjoy many National Park Trails in the area, as well as skydive and land on the beach, kayak to Dunk Island, spot crocodiles on the Hull River or White water raft down the Tully river and of course there are trips available to snorkel or dive on the Great Barrier Reef. We can help you organise any of these activities on you arrival. |
