Gateway Motor Lodge is on the right-hand side of the highway, opposite the "Welcome to Dannevirke" sign on the south-side of Dannevirke towards Wellington. The sign is lit at night and is probably the most prominent highway landmark in New Zealand. From Wellington. Proceed north on SH 2 approx 196 km to Dannevirke. Gateway Motor Lodge is opposite the "Welcome to Dannevirke" sign on the south-side of Dannevirke on the highway just below the CBD. From Napier/Hastings. Proceed south approx 120 km from Napier on SH 2 towards Wellington, and pass right through the town of Dannevirke travelling through the CBD towards Wellington/Palmerston North to the "Farewell to Dannevirke" sign; the Gateway Motor Lodge is opposite the sign on the left-hand side of the highway. If arriving late (after 11 pm), please advise us. |

| Things To Do |
Visit the site of the longest place name in the world, about 74 km east of the town. Ask at reception for directions. Historical interest. Ormondville Rail Station just north of Dannevirke is worth a visit, as is the Tui Brewery at Mangatainoka about 40 km to the south on SH 2. Play golf at one the best courses in the North Island. New Zealand has a very sophisticated milk transport network including the famous "milk train". It transfers fresh milk from Dannevirke, collected from this region, to Hawera (in the Taranaki) for processing. The milk train can be seen and photographed about 10 km south of Dannevirke. Visit the "Fantasy Cave", situated in the Dannevirke CBD, a delight with the young at heart. Dannevirke has many older and well maintained homes to view and perhaps photograph in a drive through the back streets. Wind Farm. The wind farm perched on the hills above the Manawatu Gorge midway between Dannevirke and Palmerston North is spectacular and on a clear day is a must see. The turbines are quite gracefull, turning over slowly in the breeze, stark in white agaist the green background. If you take the Saddle Road from Woodville, you can drive right up to the base of one of the turbines, find out all about them, then continue on down to Ashhurst and Palmerston North. Antiques. There are several well stocked antique shops to visit and browse, and perhaps purchase heirlooms to add to your collection. Dining. There are several fine restaurants, catering to a reasonable variety of tastes, within walking distance from the Gateway Motor Lodge. We have charge back if you want to add the cost of the meal to your bill. |
