| Things To Do |
Few visitors depart the Bay of Islands and Russell in particular without a lasting impression of the place, and its people. The regions temperate maritime climate is near perfect. The locals are friendly and outgoing. Russell is a peaceful and picturesque fishing village. Renowned as a Big Game Fishing Centre and as a holiday town of major historical interest. This is the area that was known as the 'Hell-Hole of the Pacific' and is still today recognised as being NZ's first European settlement. Today however the white picket fences, craft galleries, and weatherboard architecture belies the Villages violent history. Russell today is a quiet seaside Village and an exciting discovery. The town is very conscious of its unique heritage and is concerned in preserving the historic character of the town and the natural beauty of the Bay. The list of things to do is endless. The region is a renowned cruising ground and all manner of boat trips are available for visitors to explore, picnic, swim, and enjoy the paradise of sandy beaches and bays of this Maritime Park. Daily trips to the famous 'Hole In The Rock' or a leisurely cruise on the famous Cream Trip both allow time for Island stop-overs. Sailing is an alternative way to see the bay. Dolphin watching is a memorable experience for all ages. Fishing is a year round activity. American writer Zane Grey named it his Anglers Eldorado and the Bay of Islands the home of Big Game Fishing in NZ. Big Game and Light Tackle charter Boats work out of Russell. Your host Dudley is an experienced Sport fishing Guide and operates his boat the 'Triple B' from Russell over the summer months. If you are interested in a Fishing or Sightseeing trip - just ask! Diving & Snorkelling Trips; Kayaks, Canoes and Bike Hire are all available. The 18 hole International Waitangi Golf Course is located across the Bay from Russell. The area is a base for a variety of land-based trips - from one hour scenic and historic trips around Russell to full day trips to the far most northern tip of NZ (Cape Reinga) where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea.
