| Things To Do |
The Waipoua Forest is just half hour drive from Dargaville. It holds the largest tree in NZ. Guided Footprints Waipoua Forest Tours. Learn about the forests two thousand year history through maori legend and ecological interpretation. Chauffeured private tours or join their general night tour. This is a must do as Footprints Waipoua is one of “82 global experiences of a lifetime” published by Lonely Planet. In Dargaville visit the Maritime Museum, Zizania Paper Company where paper is handcrafted from local river grass, kauri gift shops, and at the Woodturners Studio you can spend a day with Rick learning to turn wood yourself. One of our top attractions in Northland is the Matakohe Kauri Museum, an absolute must see destination on your way back to Auckland. Horse Adventures Canter up rivers and have a wild and fun day out, but it is not for the faint hearted. Kai Iwi Lakes The Kai Iwi Lakes are crystal clear fresh water lakes that shine sapphire blue in the sun. Spend the day swimming at the safe beach, kayaking or walk around the lakes for exercise. There are kids swings and play area – a great place to go with the family. Remote, deserted beaches, shipwrecks, fossilised forests and Maunganui Bluff, that marks the end of New Zealands longest driveable beach, where you will probably be one of the only people on the beach, discover seals and birds in the sand dunes, and shells on the golden sand. Baylys Beach - Hire a quad bike and freedom ride down the dunes. Play a game of golf on a course with amazing beach views. The Hokianga Harbour. Magnificent harbour views, sand duning (riding boogey boards down the sand dunes), beach walks where a blowhole and caves can be found. Swimming, arts, crafts, waterfalls and mazes, and our deep sea fishing charter boat for marlin and scuba diving, all to be found for a day out. ‘Crossings Hokianga’, boat tour to learn the history of maori and pakeha settlement of this area. |
