| Getting There |
From Cairns - allow at least an hour & a half for the trip, longer if you intend to visit Port Douglas on your way. Head north out of Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway, passing the Port Douglas turn-off and through the town of Mossman. Proceed on the main road north out of Mossman for 25km where you will see the turn-off to the Daintree River Ferry on the right. Take this road for approx 4 km, cross the river (the ferry operates from 6am until midnight), and then take the first turning on the left approx 200m north of the river crossing. Daintree Manor driveway is about 1km down this road on the right - look for a wooden sign "Daintree Manor" & white gates. |
| Parking |
Off street parking is available. |
| Things To Do |
There are so many unique and interesting things to see in this world heritage listed region, that to do it justice you should plan on staying for more than just one day. Choose from the suggested activities and tours below. During the peak season (June – November) it is strongly recommended that bookings be made the day before to ensure a place. GREAT BARRIER REEF - DIVING/FISHING Spend more time exploring the reef and less time getting there on Rumrunner a 40ft motor sailor catamaran – only one hour off shore and they cater for the experienced diver and novices alike. Fisher folk are also catered for with reef fishing charters – all equipment supplied. DAINTREE RIVER CRUISES/BOAT HIRE There is no better way to appreciate the magnificent scenery and wildlife of the Daintree River than by taking one of the many river cruises hosted by experienced guides. Low tide is the best time to view crocodiles. Or if fishing is your preferred pastime, hire a fully equipped boat and enjoy the river at your own pace. Bookings essential. BEACHES Do you yearn for stretches of deserted beach to explore and beach comb? There are many to choose from all the way up the Daintree coast from Cape Kimberley to Cape Tribulation. As an added bonus, fringing reefs are exposed at low tide so you can explore the rock pools at Myall & Coconut beaches in the Cape Tribulation area. SWIMMING HOLES If you prefer to swim in fresh water then experience the cool clear waters of the rainforest waterholes at Myall Creek (near Mason’s Shop), Cooper Creek and at Cape Tribulation (follow the signs from the shop). SEA KAYAKING Join a guided sea kayaking group, at Cape Tribulation for a completely different perspective of the Daintree coast and marine life, or take the two day tour from Cow Bay and camp overnight on Snapper Island. BIRD WATCHING The Daintree abounds with an amazing variety of birdlife. See waterbirds by taking an early morning river cruise. Spot the forest dwellers in company with experienced local tour guides. Drive slowly on the roads and you may be lucky and spot the elusive Cassowary. Relax on the veranda of the Manor and the birds will show themselves. GUIDED TOURS There are many guided tours available from 2 hour guided walks to half and full day 4WD treks north along the Bloomfield track. DISCOVERY CENTRE Learn more about the rainforest environment, its plants, birds and butterflies. See the upper levels of the rainforest canopy on the aerial walkways and canopy tower. ENTOMOLOGICAL MUSEUM View the most comprehensive collection of insects & butterflies from the Daintree region collected over 30 years. EXOTIC TROPICAL FRUIT Visit the Cape Tribulation Exotic Fruit Farm and taste fruits from Borneo, the Amazon and Caribbean and tour the farm. Bookings advised. ABORIGINAL HERITAGE Once the home to the tribal rainforest people of the Kuku Yalanji, the Daintree are area still retains its cultural significance, added to which, the tribal community have now become involved in the management and tourism of the area. Experience the aboriginal perspective of the rainforest on a Dreamtime Walk in the Mossman Gorge. RAINFOREST WALKS Choose between guided and self-guided walks. If new to the rainforest it is advisable to do a guided walk first so that you can appreciate the unique features the rainforest has to offer. A boardwalk and concrete pathway leads you through high value rainforest with interpretive signs to Oliver Creek, where you can sit and watch out for crocodiles. CAPE TRIBULATION BEACH TO MYALL BEACH – 45 minutes This walk runs between the Cape Trib beach car park and Myall Beach & involves crossing a saddle of the Cape and a small creek (may be impassable at high tide). MT SORROW RIDGE WALK - 6 hours return For experienced walkers only but worth the effort for a spectacular view. Obtain directions from the National Park Office at Cape Tribulation.
