| Things To Do |
Even the surroundings of the hotel are picturesque and vibrant, a short stroll leads to not to be missed masterpieces of art and architecture: Palazzo Labia, in Campo San Geremia, with one of the most beautiful and important painting cycles of the 18th century, work of the great Venetian painter Tiepolo; Ca' Vendramin Calergi, now site of the Venice Casino, by Codussi, an excellent example of Renaissance civil architecture, its mezzanine houses Casa Museo Wagner, which celebrates the great German composer who lived and died here in 1883; the Ghetto, a unique architectural and city planning gem, intact since its founding in 1516 (it is the oldest in Europe). Around the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, the tall buildings with lowered ceilings to house as many people as possible, the five schola (Synagogues), splendid treasures of art and faith, and the small but very complete Museo Ebraico (Hebrew Museum) testimony of the Jewish culture are an experience not to be missed. Another itinerary, which crosses lesser known and more charming spots, starts from Hotel Principe, crosses the Ponte degli Scalzi over the Grand Canal and heads towards Rio Marin, one of the most picturesque in Venice, continues over Campo San Giacomo dall'Orio to reach the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, a 15th century architectural wonder, the Scuola di San Rocco, famous for Tintoretto's painting cycle, and then arrives at Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the great Franciscan church, second only to St Mark's for its history and art, filled with masterpieces including the Assumption on the high altar and Virgin of the Pesaro Family, sublime works by Titian. A journey along the Grand Canal, Venice's main waterway, is not to be missed during a stay at a hotel in Venice. "Ferrovia", the stop of the Actv line vaporettos (LINE 1 and 82), is just a 2 minute walk from Hotel Principe. Along the journey from the Station to St. Mark's Square, there is a continuation of wonderful buildings, like in a rich embroidery, astonishing due to their elegance and sumptuousness. Fondaco dei Tedeschi, Ca Vendramin Calergi, Ca' Pesaro, Ca' d'Oro, Palazzo Grassi and Ca' Dario are just some of the beautiful buildings lining the Grand Canal; it is also the site of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice's most important gallery, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni which houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (an extraordinary collection of contemporary art) and Chiesa della Salute, a masterpiece by Longhena. |
