The Leopold hotel recently openened in 2007 is Sheffield’s first boutique hotel and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels. Built on the former site of a Grade II listed Boys Grammar School, the Leopold is Sheffield’s newest boutique hotel. This city central property offers a most sophisticated setting, accompanied by fine gastronomy and exceptional service. Each of the hotel’s 90 fully air-conditioned, en-suite bedrooms is uniquely furnished, offering every modern amenity necessary for the discerning traveller. The 5 conferencing suites are a blend of contemporary and traditional providing flexible back drops for all company off site presentations, meetings and training sessions The Leopold sits within Sheffield’s city central latest retail quarter, and beautifully combines historic buildings with contemporary outlets to create a highly convivial social space. The square’s ‘piece de resistance’ is the Leopold Hotel. Dining at the Leopold can take many forms, from a simple menu in the relaxed surroundings of our large Terrace or a more formal setting in our ‘Restaurant 1880’. Priding itself on utilising only the finest locally produce, this stylish restaurant will turn any dining occasion into a memorable experience. What better way to wind down from a busy day in Sheffield, than to relax with a house cocktail in the picturesque Leopold bar’s terrace overlooking Leopold Square. From the North, South and the West: Exit the M1 at Junction 34 signposted Sheffield, Meadowhall and Rotherham. Follow the signs for A6178 Sheffield City Centre. Turn left onto A6178 Attercliffe Road following the signs for City Centre. Pass the Saville Street Filling Station and go under the bridge at Wicker Junction. Turn left onto Blonk Street (One Way). Turn right onto Castlegate, signposted Barnsley A61. Bear right onto West Bar. At West Bar Roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A57, signposted Ring Road and Glossop. At Broad Lane Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Townhead Street. Continue forward onto Leopold Street. From the East: Exit the M60 at Junction 24 and join the M67 signposted Sheffield. Exit the M67 at the end of the motorway and follow the signs for A57 Sheffield. At traffic signals continue forward onto the A628 still following signs for Sheffield. At Flouch Roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A616 signposted Sheffield. Pass through Langsett and Midhopestones and then branch left signposted Oughtibridge and merge onto the Wortley Road – A6102. Continue forward on the A6102 entering Oughtibridge and turn left onto One Way. Continue forward onto Middlewood Road North – entering Sheffield. At traffic signals bear left signposted City Centre. Continue forward onto Tanfield Road and at the Traffic signals turn right onto Penistone Road – A61. At traffic signals keep left signposted Worksop A57. Continue forward onto Shalesmoor and then bear left onto Moorfields. Continue forward onto Gibraltar Street and at West Bar Roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A57, signposted Ring Road and Glossop. At Broad Lane Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Townhead Street. Continue forward onto Leopold Street. Parking: Off Site. We offer special concessionary rates with Arundel Gate NCP (24hrs) Hartshead Square (NCP) and Wellington Street. Recreation • St Paul’s Cathedral • Lyceum Theatre • Crucible Theatre • City Hall • Don Valley Stadium • Meadowhall Shopping Centre • Hallam FM Arena • Peak District National Park • Winter Gardens Some of the building’s wonderful history: • During its long history, five colleges and schools occupied the premises including University College, which in 1905 moved with the Sheffield Medical School to form the new University of Sheffield at Western Park. • In the same year, King Edwards VII School briefly used Firth Building, prior to moving to its Glossop Road site in 1906. • The final school to use the building was the Central Tech, which moved to a new site in 1964, although evening classes continued into the 1970’s and the Education Department then used the building until 2001. • The Education Department was also on the site, using the building that had been built in 1880 for the Sheffield School Board. • Firth College was established by Mark Firth in 1879 and opened in that year by Prince Leopold (hence Leopold Street). • Schools / colleges using the Firth Building were:- Firth College 1879 to 1892, University College 1892 to 1905, Kind Edward VII School 1905 to 1906, Central Secondary School 1906 to 1933 (Girls), Central (Jnr) Technical School 1933 to 1964 (Boys), Evening Courses 1950’s to 1970’s. • Converted into the Leopold Hotel Sheffield in June 2007. |
