Discover the freedom of our tranquil 1940s New England designed lodge, set amongst tall trees and gardens, and yet only five minutes from the pubs, restaurants, antique shops and places of interest in the historical town of New Norfolk, and only 30 minutes from Hobart. The solid timber home was built for executives of a by gone era. The homestead offers affordable self-contained and en suite B&B accommodation in superb surroundings. The self contained garden unit has a a private balcony overlooking the pool. In the light of long summer evenings, guests enjoy sipping a glass of wine while they take in the view of the surrounding hills. Those of our guests who enjoy both hiking and touring, stay for a week or more to discover the sights of nearby Hobart, the walks in Mt Field National Park and the attractions of the beautiful Derwent Valley. The cottage has a king size bed and a single, a bathroom with washing machine, a kitchenette, sitting room with television and a large window and glass door leading to the verandah. Wireless connection is available. The downstairs games room with table tennis and other games, is popular with teenagers. The balcony has private BBQ facilities. The main house offers 5 bedrooms in all: 2x Queen, 1xDouble and 2xTwin. One of the bedrooms is suitable for the disabled and this room is also popular with our elderly guests. All bedrooms have their own bathrooms. French windows open onto wide lawns, towering poplar trees and gardens where spring flowers blaze with colour. The secluded swimming pool is fringed with trees laden with pears, apples and plums. On autumn's crisp days, golden leaves adorn the ground. On wintery days, a warm and cheerful fire awaits in the inviting sunken sitting room where you will find books and a television. Guests enjoy chatting to fellow travellers from around the world, over a glass of sherry or port. The sunroom, which looks out over the garden, is popular with guests who take an afternoon or morning off to relax and write up diaries, and to plan the next few days. There is a deep freeze and fridge for the use of guests, and also a dining table. BBQ facilities are available on request. There is a swimming pool in the garden for guests and downstairs is the rumpus room for teenagers. |

| Getting There |
Travelling to New Norfolk from Hobart one can take the Brooker Highway to Bridgewater. At this point you can cross the river and continue along the B10 or Boyer Road to New Norfolk (a very pleasant drive). Explorers Lodge is on this side of the River Derwent. As you pass the 60km sign, look out for the "Explorers Lodge" sign on your left. Take that road right and then the first road right again which is Derwent Terrace. We are at the very end. Or you can travel along the A10 to New Norfolk itself, and cross over the New Norfolk bridge to get to Explorers Lodge. Once across the bridge, turn right and then fourth left into Third Avenue following the Explorers Lodge signs, and then first right into Derwent Terrace. Explorers Lodge is at the very end of this Terrace. Coming from Launceston on the A1: when you get to Bridgewater do not cross over the bridge but at the Macdonalds roundabout take the right hand road the B10 or Boyer Road and travel along the righthand side of the river. Continue according to first instructions as above. |
| Parking |
There is ample off road parking. As we are on a cul de sac in a quiet terrace, security is not a problem. Motor bikes can be placed under cover. |
| Things To Do |
Explorers Lodge provides an ideal base to tour the southern parts of Tasmania. We are 30 minutes from Hobart, the lovely waterfront and the Salamanca market. We are 20 minutes from the Cadbury chocolate factory. We are 30 minutes from Mt Field National Park. We can help you plan a hike or two. We are one and a half hours from the Huon Valley. If over nighting, we suggest you drive to the local pub (The Bush Inn and oldest licensed pub in Australia). Pub type food but lovely verandah looking over the Derwent river, or in winter roaring fires to keep you warm. If you have the time and need a good walk there is lovely walk along the Derwent River which can be as long or as short as you like; if you continue through the caravan park you can climb the steps to gain a lovely view down on to the river and the scene below. One can walk further down to the river on the other side. One can visit the local wineries, feed trout at the idyllic Salmon Ponds, or drive through the apple plantations, the beautiful hop fields, and pass the historical oast houses on your way to the nearby spectacular Mt Field National Park. View the famous Russel Falls or hike one of the many thrilling hiking trails. We can help you plan your walks or hikes - from 15 minutes to 8 hours; from easy to difficult. There are so many lovely hikes to the beautiful tarns (glacier lakes) and spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Learn about the sub alpine vegetation and the geological rock formations from the iceage. Drive a little further to the Styx Valley's gigantic tree reserve, the trout filled Lake Peddar or go boating on alpine Lake St Clair. Fly fishermen can accept the challenge of the fast flowing Tyenna, Plenty and Styx Rivers. Or try for sea run trout in the Derwent River. |
