An exclusive wilderness wonderland

"Relax for a few days and don't worry about how you look. At Marwood you can be as reclusive as you want." This is the invitation that this unique hillside retreat set beside the glorious Grampian Ranges extends to you. Amid a springtime alive with wildflowers or witnessing Nature's stark winter drama, at Marwood you can be however you feel — reclusive, adventurous or pampered.

Marwood's award-winning Villas and Water Pavilions — all self-contained — are only metres from the Grampians National Park and near the highland village of Halls Gap. In the grounds you'll see possums, wallabies and many varieties of birds.

Marwood was built with privacy in mind. Your porch is stacked with logs for an open fire and your bathroom of polished granite has double showers, plus piles of thirsty white towels. You'll wake to birdsong and your choice of breakfast on your patio or a la carte in the restaurant.

Don't miss a four-wheel-drive tour of the Grampians accompanied by an expert bushman who will take you to areas so untouched that you might feel as though no-one has trod there before. Come late afternoon, light your fire and stretch out in your double spa, followed by a soothing massage. Your perfect Marwood day concludes with a gourmet dinner for two in the candlelit restaurant.

Marwood’s Milan Room is a small intimate and romantic restaurant, open from 8 am to 9.30pm. daily. During the darker months the interior lighting is from the log fire and candles while the small lake and the landscaped bushland outside are floodlit so that diners can view the many nocturnal animals in their natural setting. During the summer, dinner on the patio by the lake is popular; they even provide gourmet picnic dinners on the lawns across the lake.

A romantic and relaxed setting for a great meal

Chef's Profile

He specialises in simple tastes and flavours with a mixture of Mediterranean and Asian influences, using fresh local seasonal produce. Now with Chef Dave Wainwright Marwood has risen to a higher level still and Dave's menus are complemented by an excellent range of local Grampian wines as well as some of Australia’s best.

Key feature: The Grampians National Park

An amazing eco experience

Within the Park are spectacular mountain ranges, Stringybark forests and Red Gum woodlands, deep gullies with cascading waterfalls and an annual profusion of spring wildflowers. In October the heathlands become a quilt of colour with displays of Grampians Boronia, Blue Pin-cushion Lily, Grampians Parrot-pea, Grampians Thryptomene along with many other herbs and shrubs. The Park has over 800 indigenous plant species, twenty of these, including the Grampians Gum and Grampians Parrot-pea, are found nowhere else in the world.

The Grampian birdlife is prodigious, with over 200 species recorded. The open shrubby woodlands support many nectar-feeding varieties as well as colourful lorikeets, honeyeaters, parrots and the endangered red-tailed black cockatoo. Exposed heathlands support smaller birds such as wrens, robins, fantails and whistlers, whilst the tall open forests are home to hollow-dependent species such as the Barking Owl and Powerful Owl, often heard at dusk. Throughout the lowlands a large population of emus is found.

The Grampians National Park boasts over 40 mammal species, including kangaroos, possums, bandicoots, gliders, echidnas and koalas. Of note are populations of Red-necked Wallabies and Grey Kangaroos as well as an increasing number of Black Wallabies.

The aborigines are known to have been in the area for up to 40,000 years, and there is an astounding concentration of Aboriginal rock art sites in the Grampians – more than anywhere else in south-eastern Australia.

For getting amongst it all there are lots of driving and walking possibilities such Reeds Lookout, the Balconies, Boroka Lookout, MacKenzie Falls and Zumstein picnic ground or walking in the Wonderland Range.
