Lake Eacham Tourist Park has been described as a 'boutique park', with lovely grassy camping and van sites and five brightly painted family cabins. Located on Atherton Tableland in the cool mountains behind Cairns, our gardens are a birdwatcher's paradise! Our large convenience store is open 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm for groceries, drinks, ice, gas refills, petrol and diesel sales. We have a charming cafe for coffee and home-made cakes, Devonshire teas, all day breakfasts, etc. Eat indoors or on the garden terrace with the birds; King Parrots, Finches, Emerald Doves... Don't forget to have a peep in our 'Secret Gallery' at the rear of the store - two rooms filled with local and Australian crafts and art. A warm welcome is always on hand from resident owners, Lionel and Liz Carroll and daughter Sandy whose beautiful bird and wildlife photographs adorn the shop. Our park is located midway between the charming villages of Malanda and historic Yungaburra where you can enjoy a fine dining experience and explore the galleries and local shops. Full tourist information and free Tableland Maps are available and we can direct you to waterfalls, cheese factories, wineries, tea and coffee plantations, rainforest trails, platypus, night tours, or join a local canoe trip. Our rustic kitchen in the campground has an open wood fire and free gas barbecue and gas-rings, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, lots of tables etc, sink. |

| Getting There |
We are located 1.5 hours from Cairns Airport. 20 minutes south of Cairns, turn right to Atherton Tablelands up the Gillies Highway. It's a winding mountain road, with spectacular views over Cairns. Once you reach the plateau, look for the Lake Eacham Roadhouse and turn left. 200 metres further along, turn left again and drive through the lush rainforest to Lake Eacham (careful - five large speedbumps) and we are one kilometre past the lake. You will see our shop just out of the rainforest on the left. |
| Parking |
Parking is available adjacent to each cabin. Arrangements can be made for boat and trailer parking nearby. |
| Things To Do |
Our park doesn't have a children's playground or swimming pool. Children can help Lionel feed the goat, ostrich, and ducks every evening. The mother hens bring their chicks to the cabins for possible treats. They can nurse Henny Penny who comes to the office every evening for extra attention. Board Games and cards are available to borrow - chess, drafts, dominos, monopoly, scrabble, jigsaw puzzles etc. You can walk to the lake through the Rainforest or along Lakes Drive - visit the turtle-viewing platform where you also often see the small Water Dragons sunning on the bank. Walk (or run) the 3klm rim of the crater then take a refreshing swim in the 65m deep lake. Steps provide easy access or dive off the floating pontoon. You can also launch your canoe from the boat ramp (no power boats allowed). About 300m past the Lake, turn into Wright's Creek Road and park just over the bridge in the gully. Walk 40m from the bridge towards the lake to find the almost secret pathway into Lake Eacham Falls - called Vision Falls or Fairy Glen by the locals. It's only a 10 minute walk and there are several giant King Ferns along the way to several small waterfalls. Platypus live in all the rivers and streams on the Tablelands - they like the quiet slow-moving pools and can often be seen foraging among the reeds at the edge or swimming merrily along mid-stream. Best places for easy viewing are - the Petersen Creek Trail at Yungaburra which starts at the Platypus Viewing Platform at the bridge (2klm return), Picnic Crossing Road, turn right of Yungaburra-Atherton Road past the bridge over Barron River - best viewing spot is down near the pump station - Winfield Park on the way to Malanda at the rear of the parkland and, of course, guaranteed sightings for a small fee at Tarzali Lakes Fish Farm on the way to Millaa Millaa. If you want to learn more about these fascinating creatures there is an excellent video available at Yungaburra Information Centre. Whenever you are exploring the rainforests on the Tablelands, you have the opportunity of sighting a Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo either high in the branches nibbling on fresh new leaves or blossoms, or on the ground as it makes its way to the stream. They can often be sighted in the Malanda rainforest along the Tulip Tree Walk behind the Information Centre, along Petersen Creek at Yungaburra and in the Wongabel State Forest. You also have an excellent chance if you join one of Alan's Wildlife Tours - nocturnal for possums and tree kangaroos and also day-time birding tours. Some of the special birds of this region - too many to mention them all - the graceful Sarus Cranes and Brolgas who spend winter on the tablelands, feeding on the harvest fields during the day and roosting in the quiet waters of Hasties Swamp, Bromfield Crater and Tinaroo Dam at night. Brilliant viewing area above Bromfield swamp along the Upper Barron Road (about 2klm past Malanda). Every evening, before sunset, hundreds of Cranes arrive in flocks to swoop down to a noisy greeting from the early arrivals. And a dawn visit to Hasties Swamp near Atherton will reward you with smaller numbers of cranes, and thousands of Plumed Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese - comfortable all-weather viewing from the two-story bird hide. Many other birds as well, including cormorants, herons, egrets and a pair of sea eagles. The crater lakes are a magnet for birding tours. The song of the tooth-billed bower bird fills the forest in spring-time as the male perches above his bower and sings to attract the female to his artfully arranged circle of white leaves on the forest floor. At Lake Eacham a bower is easily visible from the walking trail not far past the third timber section. Also in the spring, a walk along the road past the lake you can see the Victoria Rifle Birds displaying with their wings circling their heads - spectacular. Grey-headed robins, fig birds, pigeons, cat birds are regularly seen along the lake trails. Again, Alan's Wildlife Tours are popular with birders from all over the world, especially those who have heard of the golden bower bird. The birds are fed daily on the patio - King Parrots, Lorikeets, Chest-breasted Mannikens, Finches, Doves etc. Take the rainforest walk to the Lake, swim in its crystal clear waters. Take a tourist drive to explore Mt Hypipamee National Park and The Crater (home of a Cassowary if you're lucky!). Tour the Waterfall Circuit to see the famous Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. |
