Landmarks and sightseeing opportunities abound in York. The Minster is perhaps the most famous of these, with its Rose Window, and is certainly one of the most magnificent. Quaint narrow streets with half timbered houses, shops, pubs, tea rooms and restaurants all help entice visitors to this area. Numerous archaeological sites are also to be discovered, with the city being built layer on layer for hundreds of years. Art galleries and theatres are among the tourist attractions, with street performers and market traders all contributing to a unique atmosphere. Exhibitions include the Jorvik visitor centre, which retraces the Viking ownership of the area and The National Railway Museum, which charts the history of locomotion. The picturesque North York Moors and the countryside from the hit television series, "All Creatures Great and Small," are easily accessible from a base here in the city. |
