Combining all the facilities of a Qualmark 4 star rated hotel with the ambience of a lodge, the Powderhorn Chateau is situated in Ohakune at the doorstep of the spectacular Tongariro National Park. This stunning alpine wonderland is one of only a handful of sites throughout the world to be given dual natural and cultural World Heritage status by UNESCO. Ohakune is a year-round destination located in the central North Island, and in addition to winter skiing offers a multitude of outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, fishing golf, mountain biking, scenic flights and jet-boating. Within a few minutes walk of the hotel, guests can explore some of New Zealand's oldest native bush. Our 30 hotel suites all feature unique individual touches. Their timbered interiors, queen-sized beds and large bathrooms create a homely feel and all are furnished with quality linens and fabrics. All have a lounge suite, Sky TV, work-desk with telephone and modem and tea and coffee making facilities. Suite bathrooms have a bath, shower and hair dryers. Some suites are available as twins or triples. The ’Mansion’ is ideal for larger groups, sleeping between six and eight adults. It boasts large open plan living with a spacious private balcony featuring alfresco dining facilities overlooking the Mangawhero River and native bush. During the winter months of June through to October, the Powderhorn Chateau offers a choice of two restaurants and bars. Both restaurants have large, open fireplaces which contribute to the warm, friendly atmosphere of the hotel. Those dining with us can expect excellent food and service. The Powderkeg Restaurant and Bar The Powderkeg is the heart of the Powderhorn Chateau and is where the most of the fun tends to begin! A favourite après ski haunt right at the bottom of the mountain road, the Powderkeg guarantees a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Many a tall story is told over a cold beer around the glowing open fire. The Powderkeg, open from 7am until late, is famous for its generous portions of fresh, hearty cuisine. The Matterhorn Restaurant and Bar The Matterhorn is open seasonally and for special functions - a reservation is a must-do with any stay at the Powderhorn Chateau. Located upstairs, the restaurant boasts a full a la carte menu, and its high open-beamed ceiling and beautiful native wood interiors give it with a warm ambience. Start your dining experience with a selection of small plates in the lounge or a cocktail around the hand-crafted bar. The Matterhorn is the ideal venue for special occasions, offering large tables and private dining areas if required. French doors from the restaurant open out onto a balcony, where diners can enjoy al fresco dining in the afternoon sun. Hot Pool The Powderhorn Chateau has an indoor heated pool, maintained at between 36 and 38 degrees, located on the ground floor. This facility is complimentary to house guests. |

| Things To Do |
The best-known and most popular activities in the area include skiing the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields, canoeing the Whanganui River and walking in Tongariro National Park. From the air, the magnificence of the parks’ scenery can be enjoyed by way of a scenic flight taking in the mountains, which graced cinema screens worldwide in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. During the summer months, skifield operators Ruapehu Alpine Lifts offer chairlift rides through Whakapapa ski area, affording visitors expansive views of the other large North Island mountains - Ngarahoe, Tangariro and, farther off, Taranaki. The district offers some excellent mountain bike trails – one favourite being the 17-kilometre downhill from Turoa skifield to the Powderhorn Chateau, a great challenge for you and your bike alike. For golfers, Waimarino golf course boasts well-groomed fairways, manicured greens and sweeping views of Mount Ruapehu. Enquire about golf clinics with Geoff Pitman, a professional golfer for over 20 years. The Powderhorn Chateau can help organise half-day to full-day trips, transfers and, if required, a delicious picnic lunch for your excursions from our kitchens. |
