Australia's renowned and authentic Japanese guesthouse, Shizuka Ryokan is an indulgent retreat featuring traditional accommodation, delicious cuisine and luxurious spa treatments.

Set amid tranquil bushland in Victoria's picturesque "spa country", Shizuka Ryokan is fully authentic in every detail including its architecture, furnishings, gardens and interior design.

More important however is the genuine and warm hospitality of the Japanese and local hosts, offering generous and personalised service including the signature four-course dinner which may be served individually to guestrooms. Dinners are additional and must be booked directly well prior to arrival. (Please note that the kitchen is usually closed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.)

Whilst highly traditional, Shizuka Ryokan also caters for common creature comforts which are provided in a truly stylish environment.

Couples, singles and small groups come to the inn to indulge, relax and immerse in the tranquillity.

Located in Hepburn Springs, near the equally popular holiday destination of Daylesford, Shizuka Ryokan offers the intimacy of just six guestrooms all featuring a double-sized spa, courtyard Japanese garden, genuine yukata cotton robes, mini-bar and room service.

The retreat also features a cosy lounge with an open fire place as well as a sunny deck overlooking four acres of bushland frequented by kangaroos, ant-eaters and other native animals and birds.

Shizuka Ryokan is renowned for its fine cuisine, ranging from its sumptuous four-course Japanese banquet dinners to its authentic Japanese or hearty Australian style breakfasts served daily. Dinners must be booked directly and well prior to arrival and are available only on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Fully licenced, Shizuka Ryokan offers French "Moet & Chandon" Champagne for that special celebration, fine local and regional Australian wines to savour as well as a range of Japanese beer, sake and shochu to truly immerse into the Japanese experience.

A comprehensive range of spa treats complete the indulgence, ranging from Shiatsu Massage and Geisha Facials to a myriad of body polish and wraps to suit all tastes. Spa appointments must be booked directly well prior to arrival.

Shizuka Ryokan has been featured on virtually all major travel and lifestyle television programmes and magazines in Australia and is also well known and respected in Japan and internationally.

It's is a small piece of Japan less than a 80 minute drive from Melbourne - and it's even closer to Melbourne Tullamarine airport. For Aussies, that's so much more accessible and economical than the long flight to Kyoto.

Located in the central heart of Victoria makes Shizuka Ryokan easily accessible from all directions.

Hepburn Springs, just 5 minutes from Daylesford, is located just over 100km north-west of Melbourne and is less than a 80 minute drive from central Melbourne and is just over a one-hour drive from Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.

Depending on the point of departure, Shizuka Ryokan is equally accessible via two main routes from Melbourne. Each route is approximately equal distance and travelling time.

One route is via the Western Freeway heading towards Ballarat and this route passes near Deer Park, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. Exit the freeway just at the "Ballan / Daylesford" exit and follow the signs to Daylesford.

The other route is via the Calder Freeway heading towards Bendigo and passes near Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon, Woodend and Trentham. Turn off the freeway towards Woodend and then head towards Daylesford.

From Daylesford, its twin town of Hepburn Springs is an easy five minute drive away. Several directional signs to Shizuka Ryokan assist navigation within Hepburn Springs with a series of left hand turns from Main Street into Golf Links Drive and then into Lakeside Drive.

Shizuka Ryokan is located at 7 Lakeside Drive, Hepburn Springs.
Parking Off-street parking is available in our spacious guest car park adjacent to Shizuka Ryokan.
Things To Do Located in the indulgence, wellness and spa capital of Australia, Shizuka Ryokan is an ideal base from which to explore the myriad local attractions.

The vast majority of Australia's mineral water spas is sourced locally, with the famous and newly renovated Hepburn Springs bath-house complex and Mount Franklin each just a few minutes away.

Gourmets and foodies may enjoy the many fine local cafes and restaurants, such as the world-renowned Lake House, each offering innovative regional or international cuisine utilising the bounty of abundant local produce.

Local vineyards and wineries are deservedly attracting increasing recognition and popularity and many are open for inspections, tastings and cellar-door sales.

Arts and craft buyers are well catered for, as are book browsers and antique buyers. History and genealogy buffs will be well occupied and sporting types can play golf amongst the kangaroos or perhaps explore the countryside on horseback.

Over one-hundred spa and theurapeutic therapies are on offer whilst alternate and unusual shopping is the norm. A rich Swiss-Italian heritage serves to further imbibe the local culture with colour and distinction.

So picturesque and historical is the region that it has frequently featured in cinema, ranging from "Ned Kelly" to "Love's Brother".

With regional centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo well under an hour's drive away as well as closer access to charming and historical towns such as Castlemaine, Maldon, Trentham and Clunes, "Spa Country" really can claim to offer something for everyone.
