Although it is quite different to imagine today, 150 years ago the site of no. 41 Queen's Gate Gardens would have thronged with people milling around the entrace to the Great Exhibition. The land was the market garden and was owned by Henry Alexander, a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell's secretary of state, John Thurloe (1616-1688). Thurloe and Cromwell were on a trip to Hyde Park when the horses ran away with their coach and Thurloe hurt his leg jumping out. Rumour suggests that it was on this occasion that Crowell offered him the land on which The Grange Strathmore now stands. The first owner of the building on 41 Queen's Gate Gardens was charles Bowes Lyon (1824-1904) the 13th Earl of Strathmore, father of the late Queen Mother and Grandfather of H M Queen Elizabeth II. He lived there in some splendour and it seems reasonable to suggest that the Queen Mother spent some period of her childhood in this house. Another previous tennant of the house was the art critic Harry Quilter (1808-1888) with whom the artist Whistler had a long standing conflict. In 1909 the house was purchased by Michael North who converted it into a hotel which it has remained ever since. The Grange Strathmore now represents a spectacular blend of Victorian grandeur and contemporary luxury, providing sumptuous comfort in one of the world's most exclusive and fashionable neighbourhoods. Wonderfully located, just a two minute walk from the underground and Air bus stops, the Grange Strathmore Hotel provides access to all parts of the City. Cancellation Policy: 24 hours prior to check in time to avoid first night charge. (Due to the nature of the building the rooms are fairly modest in size) |
