In the heart of Ross, Tasmania's finest Heritage Village, we're a comfortable 1830's coaching inn with creaking stairs, cosy bedrooms and log fires. Our in-house bakery is Ross's original bakery and has one of Tasmania's last working wood-fired brick ovens, specialising in old-fashioned sourdough breads. Wake to the smell of fresh baked bread and enjoy our unique Bakery breakfast of hot bread, croissants and pastries straight from the oven to your table. If it defeats you we'll give you a little takeaway bag so you can take your leftover bread and croissants for morning tea. Convict built in 1832, the Ross Bakery Inn is a classic Georgian house built from Ross sandstone, with a permanent listing on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Originally named the Sherwood Castle Inn, it served for many years as a coaching inn and horse change station on the Hobart Road. The Inn takes its present name from Ross Village's original Bakery that has operated alongside the Inn for over 150 years. Today, the Ross Bakery Inn continues the tradition, offering travellers comfortable 3½ Star accommodation with stabling for the horses and the modern wonders of indoor plumbing. Our Inn offers upstairs bedrooms with ensuites, TVs, fridges and tea/coffee making facilities. We also offer a small three bedded room above our Bakery for those who believe in Kiki, the character in the much loved Japanese anime "Majo No Takyubin" - loosely translated as "Kiki's Delivery Service". If you're looking for a bit more space or privacy then our fully equipped Kirsty's Cottage is just down the street from our Ross Bakery Inn. The Cottage has 3 bedrooms (2 queensize beds and 2 singles), a family sized kitchen and lounge with log fire. We do the same Bakery breakfas but in a basket for you to take back to the Cottage. Ross Village is the best halfway stopping point between Hobart and Launceston and is only an hour's drive to the East Coast. You can feel its magic as you cross its famous bridge and stroll down streets lined with English Elms, past old sandstone buildings dating back to Ross' origins as one of Tasmania's early garrison towns. Relax, explore and enjoy the ambience of a friendly village that has managed better than any other we know to remain unspoilt by commercialism. Ross Village won the 2008 Tasmanian Tidy Towns Award and won the National Tidy Towns Heritage Award. Our lovely little 3 bedroom cottage (c1880) just down the street from our Bakery & right in the centre of Ross Village. Great for family groups, first & second honeymoons or if you just want a bit more privacy and space Rates are for 2 people. Extra adults $12.50. Extra children $10.00. | Getting There |
We're about halfway between Hobart and Launceston on the Midland Highway. About 1 hour from Launceston Airport and 1½ hours from Hobart Airport. If you enter the village from the northern end, we are the first business you come to on the left hand side. If you drive up from Hobart you enter from the southern end of the village; cross the Ross Bridge, turn left at the crossroads and head up the main street for about 400 metres. Look for The Ross Bakery Inn on the right hand side. If you're coming over by boat on the Spirit of Tasmania we're an easy 2 hour drive south from Devonport. Just follow the highway signs to Hobart until you get to the Ross turnoff. Redline Buses run scheduled services from Hobart and Launceston to Ross. |

At the centre of Tasmania's Heritage Highway region Ross is a picturesque Georgian village with a wealth of convict associations and a rich pastoral and military history. The famous Ross Bridge is internationally recognised as one of the finest 3 arch sandstone bridges of its style in the world. Completed in 1836 the Ross Bridge is an exquisite structure in itself, but it's the 186 extraordinary carvings on its stone arches that make it a most remarkable piece of Australian convict art; the principal stonemasons being Daniel Herbert - highwayman and James Colbeck - burglar. Visit the Tasmanian Wool Centre at Ross where you'll find their stories and many others in the most comprehensive interpretation of early colonial life rural Tasmania - with particular empahasis on the superfine wool industry. At nearby Campbelltown you'll find a unique convict trail. Thousands of bricks set into the pavements of the town, each engraved with brief details of a convict. You never know you may trip over an ancestor or two; if not you can buy and plant a commemorative brick. Just 20 minutes south of Ross you'll find the town of Oatlands. A lot bigger than Ross, and we reckon not as pretty, but well worth a detour to admire what is claimed to be the largest collection of colonial sandstone buildings in Australia, including a giant flour windmill that they're planning to restore to working order sometime soon. Whilst Ross's central location makes it an ideal stopover for travellers on the Highway it's also a very practical base for touring the eastern part of Tasmania. Here are some attractions within an hour or so's drive. - Launceston City, Cataract Gorge, Tamar Valley wineries. - Ben Lomond, north east of Launceston. Spectacular mountain scenery, sometimes even skiable snow, John Glover country. - To the west the Tiers, Great Lake (great fishing), Poatina Village an ex-Hydro construction camp well worth a visit. - To the east the East coast resorts of Freycinet, Coles Bay & Bicheno. |
