Come and enjoy the experience of a home away from home. Oatlands Retreat offers affordable two bedroom (sleeps eight) self-contained, modern and spacious accommodation in historic Oatlands, approximately one hour between Hobart and Launceston on the Heritage Highway. All town attractions are within walking distance, including the recently restored Callington Mill, the third oldest mill in Australia, where you can watch flour being milled and purchase flour and bread.
Take a trip back in time. Oatlands boasts the largest collection of colonial sandstone buildings in a village environment in Australia, many of which are now businesses such as antique, candy, bakeries, craft, hotels, restaurants, cafes and a new pancake parlour. Developed as a military base for managing convicts between Hobart and Launceston, much of Oatlands was convict built.
There are many historically significant buildings. The Heritage Highway Tourism Centre, located at the mill has guided tours of the mill and the entire town. They also offer an entertaining ghost tour (prior booking essential). Another must see attraction is Casaveen, famous for woollen jumpers and factory tours.
The town is set on the shores of Lake Dulverton, a bird wildlife sanctuary with two picnic areas and free BBQs. The lake is currently stocked with trout so why not get your fishing licence in Oatlands and throw a line in.
Oatlands is only 20 minutes drive from the highland lakes of Lake Sorell and Lake Crescent where, in winter, snow can transform the alpine landscape, or just one hour?s drive through undulating countryside takes you to Orford on the pristine East Coast.
You could make the friendly town of Oatlands your base to discover Tasmania, being so central to most destinations and it has all the services of a large town, including a hospital. We are pet and family friendly, as high gates and fences enclose the property.
The unit is warm and toasty with a reverse cycle heat pump and has a selection of videos for your viewing. Complimentary full breakfast provisions of bacon and eggs, toast and spreads, cereals, juice, tea and coffee are also provided.
