Greymouth

Although the biggest town on the West Coast of the South Island, remote Greymouth still has the small-town feel of the mining hub it once was.

Early Māori discovered pounamu, the Kiwi jade, here and their craft of carving jewellery out of it continues today. Explore more of Greymouth’s history in the Shantytown Heritage Park and local museum. Rafting, quad biking and caving are popular ways to explore the rugged nature of the West Coast. Afterwards, relax on Rapahoe Beach or tour the Monteith’s Brewery, a New Zealand institution.
