"Perfect hotel perfect location!"
Our stay at The Modern was brief but memorable! The service was fantastic, the room extremely clean & well laid out. The personal touches were a welcome surprise!I would recommend this hotel to everyone particularly if you want to avoid the usual Waikiki hotels that have had their day in the sun.The Modern is absolutely modern!

"Great location."
Check in process not up to standard. We arrived early on a flight and the staff made very little attempt to make us comfortable when the room wasn't ready for 4 hours. Still an enjoyable stay.

    Pocket Guide: Waikiki Beach

Sometimes called "the birthplace of modern surfing", Waikiki was once a beach holiday destination for Hawaii’s royalty. Now it’s your turn! Waikiki has a world-famous surf beach, natural beauty, family activities and amazing shopping, nightlife and dining. Book your Waikiki hotel with us and experience the Hawaiian holiday of your dreams.

    History

Waikiki is a beachfront district of Honolulu with a name that means ‘spouting fresh water’. It’s been a surfing destination since the 1800s, when Hawaiian royals caught waves on wooden longboards. Olympic swimming gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku grew up surfing the waves of Waikiki, and was one of the first Waikiki Beach Boys, teaching visitors to surf. On Kuhio Beach you’ll find a tall, bronze statue of the sporting legend to welcome you to his home.

    Things to do

If you’ve never surfed before, where better to start than one of the world’s most famous surfing destinations? What a story! On Waikiki Beach you’ll have a glorious view of both city and nature with tall palm trees, gleaming white buildings and Diamond Head volcanic crater. If surfing isn’t for you, you can also swim, snorkel or take a group canoe ride.

Love animals? The Honolulu Zoo is home to 995 different types, including elephants and orangutans, while the Waikiki Aquarium is the second oldest aquarium in the USA and has over 3000 marine species. At night, you can check out another side to Waikiki and Honolulu with the bars and clubs. Dance clubs with 80s tunes, cocktail bars with beach views and American-style dive bars. They’re all here!

Waikiki is also close to several famous Hawaiian attractions like Pearl Harbor and Leahi (Diamond Head).

    Shopping and dining

It’s not all about Hawaiian shirts! You’ll find one-of-a-kind fashion boutiques in Waikiki. Take the eight-acre walk down to Lewers Street, also known as ‘The Waikiki Beach Walk’, to find some. Or you can head to a Honolulu mega-mall like the Ala Moana Centre for stacks more choice. Waikiki has a range of restaurants from classy fine dining to casual, relaxed bars where the decor has a very tropical theme.
