"Central, spacious and modern."
A really well-appointed room which would suit a longer stay as well as the overnighter we had. Apartment has a kitchen, balcony and sliding panels to separate the bed from the living area if desired. Lovely modern furnishings and super-comfy bed.

"Excellent facility in prime location"
The Ancharage is presently undergoing a facelift to much of the building, however this did not detract from our stay. The studio unit was large and comfortable with all the conveniences we would expect in the best housing. Staff were excellent giving helpful advise and communicated very well. We have recommended the Anchorage Appartments to both friends and family. One of the best accommodation facilities we have had the pleasure of staying at.

"Modern, clean motel on the outskirts of the CBD"
The decor, appliances and tea & coffee (plunger/coffee provided) are all modern and tastefully arranged. The rooms are clean, with comfortable bedding (cotton sheets?) and a powerful, hot shower. The managers (owners?) were very helpful when we needed to change to another, larger room - with the price increase being minimal. We stayed for 3 nights - 2 of them in a unit that catered for wheelchairs. This unit is very spacious - with one queensized and one single bed - and still having plenty of space to move around in. The kitchenette was well equipped - with a dinning suite and extra sofa chairs available. I lost my telephone charger at some point during my stay, and could not locate it again, before I left. The managers found it after I left, contacted me and we made arrangements that it was sent back home to me. Thank you for making our stay a pleasant experience! Also: there is a great coffee shop just opposite the motel in the same building complex ...

    Pocket Guide: Tauranga

The biggest city in the Bay of Plenty and the home of New Zealand’s largest port, Tauranga is also a stunning destination where glimmering turquoise ocean meets green volcanic hills. Hike to the summit of Mauao, kayak through glow worm caves or just chill out on the beach when you book your Tauranga hotel with us.

    History

Rich in food and forest, Tauranga was occupied by various Maori tribes for more than seven centuries. James Farrow was the bay’s first permanent trader, coming to Tauranga in 1829, and the Church Missionary Society established a mission at Te Papa in 1835. Tauranga wasn’t recognised as a city until 1882 when the population reached 100,000.

    Things to do

Locals call it "The Mount", and Mount Maunganui is one of Tauranga’s most memorable sights. This big green extinct volcano stands at the western end of Main Beach. Start trekking up it and in just an hour you’ll arrive at the summit, which has an amazing view of the city, the beach, the port and the harbour. Of course, you might just want to chill out on Main Beach (and fair enough too!), swim or surf, or try out one of the nearby cafes.

Check out Waimarino Adventure Park for activities like the Tarzan Swing, the Gladiator Pole and the only kayak slide in New Zealand. If you have a thirst for adventure, take a Waimarino kayak tour. You’ll paddle into the calm waters of Lake McLaren at night and follow your guides to a canyon wall sparkling with glow worms.

If you really, really want to get away from it all, Motiti Island is just a ten-minute flight away. With only about 30 residents, you’ll have plenty of quiet on this island of wide green spaces, rocky beaches with top diving opportunities, and Maori fort sites.

    Shopping and dining

Shop at Tauranga Farmer’s Market, Bayfair Shopping Centre or Downtown Tauranga’s boutiques and department stores. When the time comes to eat, there’s fine food on the shores of Tauranga Harbour, cafes downtown, international cuisine and cosy village-style bars.

    Getting here

Tauranga is two and a half hours away from Auckland, and you can get there by booking one of our flights to Auckland and hiring a car or catching a bus to Tauranga. In the Bay of Plenty, you’ll find plenty to love, so snap up some of our Tauranga accommodation now.
