    Pocket Guide: Taiping

Taiping is a spectacularly tranquil city in northeast Malaysia that gets its atmosphere from spacious parks that are always green and low-rise buildings that don’t block out the lush Bintang Hills to the east. It is a great place to soak up the casual pace of life and explore some unique inner-Malaysia attractions, some surrounded by enchanting natural scenery, others by cities buzzing with life. That first step into this gateway to Malaysia’s soul is your pick from our range of Taiping hotels.

While Taiping doesn’t feel crowded, the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari attract locals far and wide, especially on weekends. Pay a visit to see the wide variety of animals it keeps, from chimpanzees feeding lazily in the sun, to African lions skulking through their territory. Many of the enclosures will seem empty by day, but come to night at life as the nocturnal animals follow their instinct to roam and feed during the dark hours.

Right next to the zoo are the Taiping Lake Gardens, another incredible natural area to walk around. You can tell this was the first public garden created during British rule because of the giant rain trees whose branches shade the pathways and arch down all the way down to touch the ground or the surface of the lake. There are park benches, small bridges and paddle boats here – a great way to soak up this green sanctuary which continues all the way to paint the lush hills you can see to the east.

The best way to explore central Taiping is to walk, so take to the sidewalks of the city which guide you through a mix of old colonial buildings with shuttered windows, simple shop houses and the occasional modern piece of architecture. The best news is that you can stop at street stalls and restaurants during your wanderings and fill up on delicious local treats like roti (fried flatbread), coffee and nasi lemak (a flavourful dish of rice with curry, anchovies, egg and other tasty morsels).

If you’re up for trips or excursions for a day or more, head east into the hills and see the Bukit Larut hill resort, where misty clouds often flow right among the damp forest and cottages, or further to Ipoh, which will no doubt prove a full-on city experience after being in the countryside.

Discover a city where beauty and tranquillity are the same thing with our range of Taiping accommodation – and don’t forget to check out our great rates on flights to Malaysia so you have more left for your trip!
