First off, stop by Jaisalmer Fort, a medieval mud fortress that is home to a palace and a number of Jain temples. The fort rests on a massive yellow sandstone outcropping that makes for quite a photo opportunity at dusk—social media aficionados, this is what you’ve trained for! Next, take a cab or an auto rickshaw out to Amar Singh Palace, which perches on the shores of Amar Sagar Lake west of the city. Large stairs lead from this 17th-century structure down to the shores of the lake. This extraordinary palace also features numerous hand-painted murals dating back hundreds of years. Is all of this artistic splendour too much for you? Get an adrenaline spike and hop on a camel (yes, you can!) or rent a 4x4, then head for the Khuri sand dunes some 40 km southwest of the city. We’ve heard the 4x4 moves faster, but camels can spit, so choose wisely.
